Nutrition and brain aging: new perspectives to prevent cognitive decline

The NEUCRAD project (Inter- and Transgenerational Effects of Caloric Restriction in Synaptic Plasticity, Biomarkers and Vulnerability to Cognitive Dysfunction in the TgF344-AD Model) investigates how nutritional interventions can promote healthy brain aging and reduce vulnerability to cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases.
The main innovative element of the project is the study of the intergenerational and transgenerational effects of caloric restriction on brain health. Specifically, it analyzes whether a nutritional intervention applied during the life of the parents is capable of modifying, through epigenetic mechanisms, the vulnerability to cognitive impairment of the following generations, opening new perspectives for the development of preventive strategies against neurodegenerative diseases.
Using a multidisciplinary approach that integrates behavioral, molecular and biochemical analyses in a translational model of Alzheimer’s disease, NEUCRAD studies synaptic plasticity, neuroinflammation, brain metabolism and biomarkers associated with disease progression, incorporating a sex perspective to identify possible differences in response to interventions and in the mechanisms involved in vulnerability and disease progression.
The project aims to identify new therapeutic targets and generate evidence for the development of personalized, sustainable preventive strategies with a high potential for transfer to clinical practice.
