Development of epigenetic therapies for central nervous system (CNS) disorders

Flavii Therapeutics is a biotechnology company that emerged as a spin-off from the University of Barcelona that develops first-in-class epigenetic therapies for central nervous system (CNS) disorders with unmet medical needs. Its activity focuses on neurodegenerative diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders.
The project stems from the research of the G30 NeuroEpiLab group, specialized in neuroepigenetics and drug discovery. Its platform integrates the identification and optimization of small molecules capable of modulating epigenetic targets involved in the regulation of gene expression, synaptic plasticity and cognitive function.
The most advanced candidate, FLAV-27, is a first-in-class inhibitor of the histone methyltransferase G9a that competes with S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). The compound has been designed to reach the brain and act on epigenetic mechanisms related to disease progression, beyond symptomatic control.
The developed candidates have been evaluated in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These preclinical studies have shown neuroprotective effects and improvements in cognitive and behavioral parameters, along with a favorable safety profile. In Alzheimer’s models, FLAV-27 has reduced pathological markers, such as beta-amyloid and phosphorylated tau, and has favored the recovery of cognitive function, social behavior and synaptic structure.
The program is currently in advanced preclinical development and is progressing towards regulatory studies required before future clinical evaluation. In parallel, Flavii is expanding its pipeline of candidates to explore new applications in other neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders.
The objective is to transform excellent academic knowledge into therapeutic solutions with real impact for affected people and their families.
