Breakfast & Learn about intellectual property protection in mental health

With José María del Valle Escalante, lawyer and industrial property agent of PONS IP

01 July, 2026

In this Breakfast & Learn session, we delved into the main strategies for protecting and valorizing research results. Specifically, we addressed the different tools for protecting knowledge: industrial property, intellectual property and trade secrets, the protection of common results in the field of mental health, such as applications, software, methodologies, protocols, databases or training materials, as well as the criteria for determining when it is possible to opt for a patent and when it is more appropriate to resort to other protection mechanisms.

In addition, we have highlighted the importance of defining a protection strategy before disseminating research results and we have reflected on the keys to adequately managing intellectual property in collaborative projects, consortia and agreements between institutions.

The session also allowed us to highlight the need to integrate knowledge protection from the early stages of projects to facilitate technology transfer, drive innovation and maximize the social impact of research results.

Finally, this day has become a practical space for knowledge exchange that has allowed us to resolve doubts, share experiences and reinforce the importance of adequately protecting innovation to turn it into real solutions for mental health.
