Lands of Fog
Augmented/virtual/mixed reality
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Mixed Reality environment using Full-body Interaction to foster social initiation and collaboration behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Lands of Fog consists of a Mixed Reality environment with full-body interaction created to address social and communicative behaviour difficulties in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The project provides an ecologically valid playground where the interaction between an ASD child and another without ASD is enhanced. The intelligent system mediates the experience by making the children explore and discover the virtual environment while spurring open behaviours of social initiation; difficult behaviours for children with ASD. For the development of the interactive experience, a participatory design methodology was applied, incorporating four children with ASD in the design team as full-fledged co-designers.

The group is also developing PROSOCIAL, a project consisting of a Mixed Reality environment with full-body interaction created to address social and communicative behaviour difficulties in children with ASD. This project provides an ecologically valid playground where the interaction between four children with ASD or four children without ASD is enhanced. The intelligent system mediates the experience by making the children perform synchronized activities so that they achieve Interpersonal Entrainment. By achieving IE, children gain a sense of belonging to the group and consequently show more prosocial attitudes towards other children. For the development of the interactive experience, a participatory design methodology is being applied, incorporating two groups of 25 children without ASD from 3rd grade and 4 children with ASD into the design team as full-fledged co-designers.
