From the idea to the market: spin-offs created from mental health research

On Wednesday 6 July, we celebrate the 9th Breakfast & Learn of the TECSAM Network. In this virtual day we will bring together three researchers in the field of mental health who have created spin-offs or are about to do so. We will reflect on the next steps, the difficulties, the main allies and the challenges. Sign up for this new B&L event!

The emergence of business projects within institutions dedicated to research provides added value to society and stimulates the entire innovative business fabric. Spin-offs have this potential since they can have a positive impact on society by providing technology products and solutions.

However, the process of transforming an idea or research project into a spin-off is not easy, instead, research staff must follow a long and often complex path to bring their solution to market.

With the aim of giving space to the different spin-offs, already constituted or in the process of doing so, linked to the Network member groups, we organized, on Wednesday, July 6, the ninth virtual meeting of the Breakfast & Learn, under the name “From the idea to the market: spin-offs created from mental health research”.

At this round table, we will bring together three representatives, which have developed projects in the field of mental health, that have completed or are on the way to doing this process. We will be able to learn about real cases and experiences that will clarify the necessary steps for the spin-off creation, the difficulties you may encounter, the main allies, the challenges that must be faced, etc.

On this occasion, we will be joined by Petia Radeva, principal investigator of the Computer Vision and Machine Learning group at the Computer Vision Center (CVC) and the University of Barcelona (UB), who will explain how the spin-off Aigecko Technologies has started; Guillem Feixas, principal investigator of the Intervention in Clinical and Health Psychology group at the UB, and co-founder and partner of Mind & Identity; and Elisenda Currius, representative of the Osona Functional Diversity Association (ADFO), an entity that, in collaboration with the LAM-UPC group, is developing MUVITY, a future spin-off.

Thanks to the expert vision of the speakers at this upcoming IX B&L of the Network, we will have the opportunity to identify the steps to follow to create a spin-off: from market analysis, the formulation of the idea, studies to validate the project, possible collaborations, financing funds, marketing process, among others.

The meeting will be held in a virtual format and with free access prior registration to this form. You can leave your questions in writing and the speakers will answer them on the day of the session.

About the Breakfast&Learn

The Breakfast&Learn is a formative initiative dedicated to innovation, valorization and transfer with a special focus on mental health and technology, led by the TECSAM network with the collaboration of the Catalan mental health cluster, Cluster Salut Mental Catalunya (CSMC). These open meetings are expected to be a monthly space where knowledge is shared and synergies and networking are generated, where the speakers will be guests with expertise in the sector, including administration, research, the private sector, as well as users and families.

The meetings will focus on three major thematic areas: Tools for bringing society and research closer together (innovation, marketing, contact with the private sector, business models, spin-offs, empowerment of affected and user people…), tools for protecting research results (intellectual protection, patents, other protection models…), and tools for doing research with clinical research (ethical regulatory aspects, medical devices, digital tools, software…).
